i think in the debates romney has two big problems that he's got to try to overcome. one is mathematics. he's got to show what loophole he's going to close. the second is authenticity. he's got to show that authentically he's someone that cares about average working people. he hasn't done both. he's losing ground because of both problems. >> when you look at the new gallup poll, be for example, it shows that the majority of americans think that the president is a better candidate for the middle class. 53% for president obama, thinking he's better for the middle class. romney, 43. and then you go to the president, who will the president do more to favor? middle class, wealthy, 66% say middle class. 17% say wealthy. who will mitt romney do more to favor? 35% say middle class, 57% say wealthy. how does romney overcome this overwhelming view that he is going to serve the wealthy and he doesn't serve or care about the middle class? >> i think romney has to be able to be accessible, number one, during the debate, as robert mentioned. but he also has to have a conversation w

i just spoke with senator rob portman, he played the president in all of romney's debate, mock debate performances, preparing for this debate and he said he believed tonight's debate changed the dynamics of this race and the romney that we saw on that stage is the romney we're going to see for the next five weeks. he's going to take this message this effort to connect the specifics he used, the discussion about his record in massachusetts and his proposals on that campaign trail. he said you're going to see that in weeks weeks to come. romney talking about the specifics of his propose as and connecting with the american people. >> pelley: jan, thank you. cbs news coverage of the first presidential debate of 2012 will continue from denver in just a moment. vo: for years, sacramento politicians have chopped away funds for our schools. today, we're forty-seventh out of fifty in per-pupil funding. now these politicians say unless we send more tax dollars to sacramento, they'll cut education again. here's a new approach. prop thirty-eight sends billions in new education dollars straight to

john, this is not officially a disaster of debate prep for mitt romney. you know, as you know, debate handlers have come up with zingers before to candidates, but they do not leak to the media ahead of time that they have a big bag of zingers ready to go. they actually try to let the candidate take some credit for being clever and quick on his feet. this is now a hopeless situation for romney. >> i've become increasingly convinced when they're talking about zingers they're talking about the hostess snack cakes. there's been so much telegraphing of punches of the romney campaign not only with the zinger comments but also last week when they started telegraphing the notion they were going to take on the president on his vars veracity, they were going to challenge his onsti. they're tal graphed so gratuitously, it makes me think that some of these things must be decoys and that mitt romney is not going to try to throw zingers on him or he's going to do what he does need to do which is to look presidential. there's still a huge number of people in the country

plus, romney pulls the debate in switch, but will post-debate momentum make a difference in battleground states like ohio and florida? and charlie chris will join me. >>> meanwhile, fact checkers are busy today after mitt romney tries to reexplain his tax plan, the president calling it mr. romney's "oh nevermind strategy." and specifically, which debate matters most, the first or the last? ron reagan and megan mccain join me with their takes on that. much more coming up after this. i'm barack oba ma, and i approve i'm barack this message. oba these appliances could have been made here in america. but a company called global tech maximized profits by paying its workers next to nothing... under sweatshop conditions in china. when mitt romney led bain, they saw global tech as a good investment... even knowing that the firm promoted its practice of exploiting... low-wage labor to its investors. mitt romney - tough on china? since when? >>> good morning, everybody. i'm thomas roberts. the president looks unprepared and his team tries to regroup while romney and fair-weather republicans bask i
